Programme: Livelihoods and Food Security

Project: Innovations in dry season horticulture for women and smallholder farmers in Eastern Uganda.

TEWDI Uganda as the country lead organization  in partnership with the University of California Davis  and other partners in Eastern Uganda through the Horticulture Innovation Lab, works to empower rural women smallholder farmers who are often excluded from irrigation and market development initiatives. The project works with 6 farmer groups at different irrigation innovation sites throughout out eastern Uganda to support farmer led innovation. We work with irrigation communities to develop innovations that help women and other small holders improve diverse aspects of irrigated horticulture – including land access, water use, finance and credit, labour difficulty ,time use, farmer cooperation ,women’s voice and other aspects of governance. Each site provides a different insight into how to do this from their unique agro-ecology, farming systems and cultures.

Funded by USAID under the Feed the Future initiative, the project promotes small-scale irrigation innovations for dry-season horticulture. These interventions aim to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen economic opportunities, and enhance food security for women in Eastern Uganda.
