Project: Farmer-led nutrition resilience for rural households -  integrating smallholder horticulture, soil health, and economic opportunities for women farmers

With financial support from Foundation S, TEWDI Uganda is currently implementing a project aimed at strengthening the nutritional and economic resilience of rural smallholder farm households in Eastern Uganda.

This initiative responds to the increasing climate variability affecting the region—rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and growing risks of crop loss. These challenges are particularly hard on women farmers who manage both household food production and income generation.

Project Objectives:

  • Improve nutrition for women farmers and their families by increasing vegetable crop production.
  • Establish model household horticulture gardens that provide both food and income for women.
  • Promote soil health solutions through practical, community-based approaches tailored to smallholder farms.

The project delivers hands-on support at the household level, helping women farmers adopt sustainable horticultural practices and soil improvement methods. In doing so, it strengthens their ability to adapt to climate stress, improves access to nutritious food, and boosts household  health and income.
